    Purpose.

    A drip of the faucet,
    Humming fridge.
    3 AM.

    A walk along the shore,
    Whispering wind.
    Alone.

    Questions for God,
    Answered with stillness.
    Pain.

    Escape the mosquitoes,
    Return to a sleeping house.
    Peace.

    Dennis

I met a homeless man the other day. His name was Dennis, and he and his dog Smiley were resting under a pavilion at a park where my friend Justin and I were giving out some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. His bike leaned against the post next to him, loaded down with all his earthly possessions, among which was a large Confederate flag fastened to the back basket. He later told us that he wasn’t racist, but that the flag, to him, was a symbol of rebellion. To him, even though he was homeless, he was free. He said that he may have nothing, but no one could hold him down or take away that freedom.

As he talked, I couldn’t help feeling an odd similarity to Dennis. I don’t know what Dennis’s opportunities were, but maybe he rejected some things that could have gotten him out of his situation so that he could save his pride, the freedom that he had to do what he wanted, go where he wanted, be who he wanted. In the process somehow he ended up giving up the chance to be something more so that he could follow his own desires. I understood his fear of being controlled, especially as someone who has ended up in some really controlling relationships in the past. I think we can get so scared that someone is going to control us that we end up shutting people out and thus get trapped in our own heads. I forget how much I learned through those relationships, that even though what those people did was wrong, that a lot of good came of it and I probably would have been stuck in some bad places without it.

Frank Herbert once said, “Seek freedom and become a captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty.” There’s a lot of truth in that. CS Lewis talks in Mere Christianity about how some things are byproducts of others— like if your main goal in life is to be healthy, you can stress so much about being healthy that you become cranky and no fun to be around and end up dying young anyway because the stress aged you far more than eating a few bags of Doritos ever could have. There’s something that happens when we take things that are good things, like food, sex, or freedom, and then make them the primary thing that we strive for that eats our souls and ends up making us miserable instead of happy. They’re all good things, but people are more important. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about freedom, it’s that if that’s the primary thing I’m looking for, I better have some good tennis shoes because I’ll be doing a lot of running.

There’s a song called “Weight of Lies” by the Avett Brothers. It’s a good one. Even if you don’t like folk music, go listen to it or at least read the lyrics. Sometimes we do need to get away; sometimes we are trapped in situations that are bad or with people who aren’t good for us and we need to get out of those places so that we can breathe and heal and get some perspective. But don’t just run away from something without running towards something else.

It rained a lot at our Warped date :-)

    twloha:

The West Palm Warped date last Saturday was a rainy one. Already soaked, tons of fans waited in line for over an hour for a chance to spend a few moments with a band signing around the corner. Because waiting in the rain is no fun, the TWLOHA team decided to pump up the crowd standing in front of our tents with a spontaneous photo shoot. Aren’t they glamourous?

To Write Love on Her Arms 2009 Summer Interns, with House Manager Karissa

    —-

Guess what? If you’re planning on coming out to Warped in Florida this weekend, you’ll get a chance to chat with our interns, who will be joining up with the TWLOHA road team for the Orlando and Miami dates. Our interns have been with us all summer working on projects, learning more about the issues To Write Love seeks to address, and living together in community. If you’ve ever considered applying for an internship with TWLOHA, why not swing by and talk with one of them at our booth to get a first-hand account? They would love to share about their experiences with you, and are looking forward to meeting you guys… Hope to see you there!

    Be as a bird,
    perched
    on a frail branch
    that she feels
    bending beneathe her,
    still she sings,

    sings,

    knowing she has wings.
